Characterization
Robert Peck-
Rob is the main character of the book. He is a round character because we know that he is13 years old and lives in Learning, Vermont. He is a farm boy during the time period from 1923-1927. He loves his pig and is part of the Shaker religion. Rob is also a stock character because he is a stereotypical farm boy because he works hard, has animals, and helps a cow give birth. He is also a dynamic character. He changes his beliefs throughout the book because he thinks that Baptist are weird because they try to drown babies. Although Rob does not realize that Mr. Tanner and his Aunt Matty are Baptist, all he knows is that they are really nice people. At the end of the book, Rob has to become a man because he has to watch Haven kill Pinky. They need the meat and he has to take over the farm because his dad dies. |
Haven Peck-
Haven is Robert's dad in the book. He is also a round character because we know that he is illiterate, he slaughters pigs for a living He is also a Shaker and when he is not working at his job he is taking care of the Peck farm. He is described to us by direct characterization because he says that they he can not read or write. He is also described indirectly because he tells Rob that you can base a man's character by how neat he plants his crop and how he keeps his farm. When Haven said this the reader could infer that he was a hard worker because his crops are straight and he keeps his farm. We can also infer that he is a hard worker when Rob found the piece of paper where Haven tried to write his name. Haven teaches Rob about Shaker religion and how to run the farm so that he can run the farm someday when Haven is dead. |
Benjamin Tanner
Benjamin Tanner is also a round character because we know that he is a Baptist, he is Rob's neighbor, he is also a farmer and he is married to Bess Tanner. He is described by the author through indirect characterization. One example of it is when he gives Rob a baby pig for helping Apron give birth which says that he is a generous. Another example of him being generous is when he takes Rob to the Rutland fair to show Pinky and his calves Bob and Bib. Mr. Tanner is also caring when he carries Rob home after he gets injured from Apron. He is also caring when he shows up for Haven's funeral because it showed that he respected Haven and he cared about the Peck family. Benjamin Tanner is very nice to Rob and his family. He is a static character because he does not change throughout the book and is very helpful to the Peck Family. |
