Rising Action
Rob goes for a walk in the woods with Pinky and witnessed a hawk kill a bunny. Later that night while Rob is in bed he hear voices in his house down below and he goes to eavesdrop and finds out that it is Mrs. Hillman. Rob finds out that Mr. Hillman went into Learning so Rob and Haven get Salomon to go look for Mr. Hillman. When they arrive in Learning they see Mr. Hillman in the cemetery digging up a grave. Rob and Haven help Mr. Hillman dig up the grave of the baby that he had during an affair because he wanted to man up to his sin and bury the baby on his land. One day while Rob was walking by Mrs. Bascom's house he finds out that she needs him to carry flower pots so he helps her. Mrs. Bascom feeds Rob for helping her and Rob talks about going to the Rutlenburg fair. After Rob finishes his chores Haven tells him that the Tanners want him to go to the Rutlenburg fair with them so he can show Bob, Bib, and Pinky. When Rob gets to Rutlenburg he is overwhelmed by the size of it and all of the people there. When Rob shows Bob and Bib he feels very important because of all of the people clapping. Then Rob has to rush and go get Pinky so he can show her too. Rob and Pinky win first place and receive a blue ribbon because Pinky was the best behaved pig there. When Pinky gets back from the fair Rob is afraid that she might be barren. Haven also tells Rob that he thinks that he has an infection and Rob will have to become the man of the house soon. Rob then tells Mr. Tanner that he thinks Pinky is barren so Mr. Tanner brings his prized bull over Sampson to find out if Pinky is barren or not. After they mate Rob finds out that Pinky is barren. He hopes his dad can kill a dear so they will not have to kill Pinky. Haven does not end up killing a deer so they are going to have to kill Pinky because she is essential for the Pecks survival in the winter. On a cold day Rob and Haven go and kill Pinky. When Rob approaches Pinky he gives her a hug and watches his dad hit her with a crowbar and kills her with a knife. At that moment, Rob hates his dad for killing Pinky but once he sees the tears running down his dad's face he forgives him because he knows that he did not want to do it but he had to for his families survival.
