Characterization
Ralph- Is the leader of the boys. He is a round character. The text is specific in the way they describe his hair and how it grows throughout the novel. Also the text describe the appearance of Ralph and how he becomes very dirty and does not mind being dirty. However the text also gives the reader many details about his thoughts a feelings. Ralph tries to convince himself that he does not things that happen on the island. He does this when Simon is killed and when he thinks that they are going to get rescued when he thinks he sees a ship but there is not one. Ralph is the protagonist but is also a dynamic character. He changes from the beginning because he was decisive a leader and at the end he was questioning himself. Ralph uses the superego of his brain to make decisions. He leads the boys and makes the correct decisions for all of the boys. He helps the tribe the most by helping them build shelters and maintain the fire.
Jack- Is the want to be leader of the boys. Jack is a round character. I know that he changes psychologically from the beginning of the book to the end. At the beginning we know that he wants to be the leader and but is civilized and by the end he turns into a savage and loves hunting and he even killed Simon and tried to kill Ralph. He is also described in the novel when he has his shirt of and is covered in clay. It is a big change from the beginning of the novel when he has a black cloche on. Jack is definitely a dynamic character because he was never really nice in the beginning but turned into a savage by the end. This is shown in the novel at the beginning of the book were he would not kill the pig when he was on top of it. At the end he was willing to kill humans. He is the antagonist character because he also tries to create conflict when he broke away and started his own tribe. Jack uses the id part of his brain because he makes decisions for no reason. He ties up Wilfred for no reason just because he can.
Piggy- Is like Ralph's Robin and usually sides with Ralph. Piggy is also a round character. The text tells us that he is really chubby because he has the name Piggy. The text also describes him with glasses and says that he has asthma. I can relate to Piggy because I used to wear glasses and also have asthma. Piggy is also a static character. He does not change become a savage like the others and throughout the entire book tries to come up with new ways to create some sort of technology like a sundial and even a radio. Piggy uses the ego part of his brain to make decisions because he makes smart decisions like putting the fire on the beach so they do not have to go on the mountain because of the beastie.
Simon- He is a very interesting character in the book. He could be described as a round character. Simon is described mentally because he has morals and believes in them because it is the right thing to do. One thing that he does is helping the little kids pick fruit because they are too small to reach it. Another example of describing Simon mentally is when he thinks that the pig head is talking to him. At that point he realizes that the beast is in the boys because how they act like savages. Another way that he is described mentally is when he likes to go to his special place in the wilderness were it is just him and his thoughts. Another example that Simon is morally correct is when he helps Ralph build the shelter when everyone else is playing or hunting. Simon is also a static character because he does not change throughout the novel and always is morally correct because he uses the unconscious part of his brain. An example is picking fruit of the tree for the little kids. He also uses the ego part of his brain by going on the mountain to see what the beastie is and goes to tell the others.

Themes
Civilization vs. Savagery- I think that this is the major theme in the novel. When the boys first arrive on the island they live civilized and have a set rules that they live by. The father that I read into the novel the boys became less civilized and acted more like savages. The savagery started with Jack and his obsession with hunting. The started killing pigs which lead to killing some of the boys and neglected the rules that had in place.
Loss of Innocence- The boys landed on the island clean cut and well behaved. At first they lived with a set of rules and had control of one another. After a while on the island the boys began to turn into animals and hunted all day. They also stopped obeying the rules that they created. The boys began to play less and fight more. This was the beginning stages of the boys turning into savages. It first started with Jack but it spread quickly to all of the others. They began to kill one another and fought all of the time. They also dressed a lot differently by putting paint on each other and ran around half naked. The boys forgot what it was like to be kids and have fun.
Absolute Power- I think it was one of the biggest conflicts in the book. Jack just wanted to be powerful so he could boss everyone. Ralph was the boys choice to run the island but quickly faded. At first all of the boys like Ralph and like his decisions. Then Jack created his own tribe and convinced everyone to join him. He always got his way by force and bribed everyone to join his tribe with a pig dinner. Power got to Jacks head which made him make irrational decisions.

Motifs
The conch shell is one motif that I found in the novel. The conch represents the order with the boys because it reappears when the boy wants to store order. It recurs in the meetings and when the conch is destroyed it shows how to boys turned into savages.
Another motif found in book in the novel is the face paint. I think the face paint represents savagery because every time the boys are going for a kill they have the face paint on. Also everyone's attitude changes when they put it on to a beast mode.
Piggy's glasses are another motif found in the novel. Piggies glasses reoccurring when the boys need to make fire because the fire is the only way for the boys to get rescued. The fire is also another invention. Piggy's glasses represents intelligence because Piggy always wanted to invent sundials and even a radio.
Symbols
One symbol that I found in the novel was the conch shell. I think that the conch shell symbolizes structure so the boys live civilized. The conch is used to gather all of the boys together and is also used so the boys know who's turn it is to talk. The conch is a very powerful at the beginning of the book and the boys obey it. At the end of the novel the conch means very little because when Ralph and Jack are fighting over Piggy's glasses Piggy tries to calm the situation by blowing the conch but it does not stop the boys from fighting. Lastly at the end the conch is destroyed.
Another symbol that I found in the book was the face paint. Jack put on the face paint when he went hunting. He became a savage when he had the face paint on. I think that the face paint symbolizes is savagery because when the boys had the face paint on they were trying to kill like when they went pig hunting or even when they were trying to kill Ralph.
I think that Piggy's glasses are another important symbol for intelligence. Piggy's glasses show his intelligence because he was always the smartest boy. Piggy wanted to invent things while on the island like the sundial and the radio. Also the boys had to use his glasses for fire. I think that his glasses symbolized power because whatever tribe had his glasses they could start a fire. The fire was used universally for cooking and for rescue. Piggy's glasses saved the boys so they could get off the island because Jack created a huge fire so that the naval officer saw it and came to the island.

Tones
I think the author wants you to feel how realistic it is to real life. I think the author shows how normal people can turn from nice and civilized people to savages. I think the author is trying to make you feel what it would be like to get stranded on an island.
I think the author also wants to make sad because of what happened to Piggy and Simon. The author also portrays sadness when he shows the little kids crying. The author also uses the weather to show sadness after Simon dies because it starts raining. I think that author really wants to pull on your heart strings when reading the book.

Moods
One mood that I felt while reading this book was anger. I was angry when Piggy was bullied and when they would kill each other. I was mad when Jack called Piggy a fatty in front of all of the boys. I was also angry when they took Piggy's glasses so they could make a fire. Piggy did not like it when they took his glasses but Jack and Ralph did not care. I was also mad when the boys would kill each other especially Simon. Simon was killed when the boys were pretending that he was the beast. This made me mad because no one stopped the boys from killing Simon. Also Roger also tried to kill Henry who was just a little boy. Roger did kill Piggy by hitting the lever to let the boulder hit him and the conch into the sea. This made me very mad to see the killing and Jack picking on Piggy.
Another mood that I felt while reading the book was happiness. I was happy when the boys helped each other, when the boys would play, and when they were rescued. I was happy when Simon helped the little kids pick the fruit that they could not reach. I was happy when the boys would enjoy themselves because they had many hardships while on the island. Lastly I was happy when the boys were rescued because most of the boys survived and were able to get back to their families. There were many sad parts in the novel but also many happy parts in the novel as well.

Allusions
One allusion that I found in the book is relating it to the hunger games. I think that the hunger games are like this book because kids have to survive without getting killed by the other kids.
Another allusion that I can make while reading this book was that the book is like war. The book is like war because civilized people are sent over sees to fight which makes them become blood thirsty which is why it is hard for them to live with civilized people again.
The last allusion that I can make while reading this book is that it is like survivor. Survivor sends normal people on an island and at first they get along like in the book. But eventually there is separate alliances like the tribes in the book. They both show how people try to act civilized but change over that time period.
