Tones
I think the major tone of this book is sorrow. Between the lines of the book you hear a kid that has to turn into a man quickly to survive. The sadness comes out when he talks about getting seperated from his mother and sister and he does not know how to respond but becomes silent and put one foot infront of the other. Silence comes out in the book when he sees peolple brutaly beaten including his father and his only feeling is anger toward him. Sadness is shown when he can see the smoke rising from the crematory and wonders if that was anyone he knew. Due to his sadness it leads him to get angry at God for not stopping the Nazis and questions God as to why is a nine year old kid dying. At the end of the book when Elie gets out of the camp he is not really excited because the sadness overwhelms him. He lost his entire family and does not even think about revenge toward the Nazi's.
I think another tone in this book is courage. Courage is found in all of the Jews that try to survive although, I think that Elie has the most courage in the book than any certain character in the book. His courage is apparent when he gets beat by the kapo and does not cry or show emotion and walks away. His courage allows him to survive the trip when his foot is injured. Elie is like David in this picture because in the end he beats Goliath by surviving the tourture of the living conditions. Elie's father also has a great amount of courage by watching over Elie so they can survive. All of the Jews had courage because they had to go through what no other human being should have to endure.
