Summary
Section 1
- The boy leaves school because he is mad at a boy named Edward Thatcher. While he was blowing steam in the country he saw a cow struggle and after he got closer he realized that the cow was giving birth. He helped the birth the cow and in the process he lost his pants and was drug through a thorn bush. He also tries to help the cow by pulling out the cows goiter in her throat. While his hand was in the cows throat the cow was biting his arm and gets drug all over which tears up his body.

- Robert passes out from getting drug from the cow. he is awaken when Mr. Tanner the next door neighbor is carries Rob home because his arm is torn up bad. When Rob got home his mom stitched up his arm and he rested in bed for a couple days so he could heel up.

Section 3
- Rob recovers from his injuries and helps Rob's dad build a fence to separate their land from Mr. Tanners. Rob learns from his dad that fences do not separate people but bring them together because they set boundaries. Mr. Tanner comes over to Rob's and thanks him for helping Apron and Rob finds out that Apron had to calves. For helping Apron Rob receives a baby pig from Mr. Tanner and this is Rob's first thing that is ever his.

- Rob and his dad finish building the fence and Rob names his pig Pinky. Rob has to create a sty for Pinky so Rob's dad has Salomon their ox pulls the sty away from Daisy the milk cow because it says in Shaker law that the pig will destroy the cows milk and eat their young. Rob finds out from his dad that he is illiterate and said that he can not vote which frustrates him because people can not see how straight the rows of corn or his work ethic which is why Rob's dad wants Rob to go to school. Rob and his dad finish Pinky's sty too.

- Rob and Pinky went out in the country again. While they were out their Rob saw a hawk circling them above and all of a sudden the hawk swoops down right over Pinky's head and attacked and killed a rabbit near by. While the rabbit was getting attacked it scared Pinky and Rob.

- A on Rainy summer night Rob is awaken from the voice of a person that he did not recognize so he went down to investigate and it was Mrs. Hillman and she said that Mr. Hillman was not home and wanted Haven Rob's dad and Rob to go to look for Mr. Hillman. Rob and Haven get Salomon ready to pull the wagon and they go out in the rain to look for Mr. Hillman. They find him digging up a grave in a grave yard. Rob and Haven help him dig up the grave so he can give it the proper burial. They arrive at the Rob's home at dusk.

Then Haven comes in and tells Rob that Mr. Tanner wants him to go to Rutlenburg fair to show his prized calves Bob and Bib. Rob is really excited because he can take Pinky too.

After He shows Bob and Bib he has to rush to go get Pinky so he can show her and when he gets her she is dirty so he has to use his 10 cents that his Aunt Carrie gave to buy a bar of soap so he can quickly clean Pinky. He just makes it to show Pinky and Pinky ends up winning best behaved pig and Rob receives the blue ribbon that he always dreamed of.

- Haven finds the weasel that was killing his chickens. Rob and Haven decide to ask Ira Long to see if he wants to get his dog weaseled which is when you have a dog and weasel fight so the dog will hate and kill weasel for the rest of their life. Ira decides to weasel his dog so they but his dog and the weasel in the barrel the dog kills the weasel but is almost dead. When Ira takes his dog out of the barrel it bites him so they have to kill the dog because it is in misery from the fight with the weasel. Haven said that he will never weasel a dog ever again.

- Rob is worried that Pinky can not have a litter and they do not know what to do with her because Rob was going to make money off her litter. Rob has to go squirrel hinting for his mom so he can get nutmegs. When he gets back from squirrel hunting Rob talks with his dad and finds out that his dad health is worsening. His dad said that Rob will have to be the man on the house so he can take care of his mom and Aunt Carrie too. His dad also said that he is going to have to run the farm and Rob struggles with coping with these feelings.

- On a snowy morning Rob and His dad have to kill Pinky. Rob's dad did not kill a deer so they need to kill Pinky for the meet and because they need the meat from Pinky. When they go and kill Pinky Rob can not move when it is happening it is like he is frozen and can not move a muscle. At that moment he hates his dad for killing Pinky/. After Pinky is dead Rob cries and cries and hugs his dad to cry more and comes to peace and does not hate his dad but loves him with all of his heart and this is the first time that Rob has ever seen his dad cry.

When he goes inside for breakfast he tells his mom that Haven was not getting up this morning and is not going to work but is at peace. Rob, Aunt Carrie, and Rob's mom get the funeral arrangements set. At the funeral all of Heavens closest friends and family show up and Rob says a few words about his dad and how he was a hard worker. After they burry him Robs comes to peace and realizes that this was a day that no pigs would die.
