Summary
Section 1. In the first paragraph we get the background on the story and learn about the characters. Elie is the main character of the book. Elie is a teenage Jew that is trying to learn his religion. Moshe the Beadle shares stories with Elie and one day he returns to the village to warn the Jews that the Nazi's are going to take over and that they should leave before they can't. The people of the town and even Elie do not believe them.
Section 2. The Jews aboard a packed train car to take them to Auschwitz internment camp. The Nazis warned the Jews that if one person left the train they were all going to die. While aboard the train Madame Schachter was screaming that she saw a fire but their was no fire. Members abord the train had to quiet her down.
Section 3. Elie and his father get separated with his sisters and mother. Elie and his father lie about their age and occupation so they survive the first selection. Elie and his father get moved from Auschwitz to birkenau.
Section 4. Elie and his dad have to work at a building sorting nuts and bolts. Elie meet a nice french girl at the factory and sees her later on in life. Burma is bombed several times but the camp still stands. Several prisoners are hung because they stole things during the bombing and a nine year old boy is hung because the Nazi's want to show the Jews that there is no God. The Nazi's force the Jews to march by the bodies that were hanged. Elie has to get his gold crown removed from his mouth.
Section 5. Elie struggles beleiving in God anymore becuase of what he sees in the camp. Elie's dad did not pass the first selection and thought he was going to die but survied the second selection that day. Elie suffers a foot injury and ends up having surgery in the hospital. Elie has to make an important decision whether or not to stay in the hospital or go with his dad on a journey to the next concentration camp.
6. The Russians approach the camp and force the Nazis to evacuate all of the Jews and Eli makes the decision to travel with his dad instead of staying in the hospital. Elie struggles with the 42 mile run but survives with his father. The Nazis struggle with the run and they have to take a break in an abonded town where many Jews died from the cold winter. Then the Jews have to travel on an open train car to make it the rest of the way to the internment camp. Most of the Jews died on the train car and only 12 out of 100 Jews survived the train ride. The Nazi's plannned on killing the remaing 20,000 Jews and one of them was Elie but the American army liberated the camp April 10th, 1944. Elie gets food poisening and is in the hospital when he got out the the concentraitin camp. When Elie looks into the mirror he sees a corpse when he looks at himself in the mirror.
